The goal of this Boiler Replacement Project is to modernize and enhance the efficiency of the facility’s central energy plant. SES is managing the replacement of the existing steam boilers in Building 1 and leading the design which includes a more efficient and reliable system that addresses the aging infrastructure, improves energy efficiency, and maintains compliance with current VA standards and regulations. The project scope includes the demolition of existing boiler assemblies and associated subsystems, followed by the installation of new boiler assemblies and supporting equipment. Three (3) options were evaluated: 1) A steam-only system similar to the current setup, 2) Two hybrid systems combining steam, and 3) Hot water boilers at different efficiencies.
The facility chose to install new high-efficiency steam boilers with flue gas economizers.
The comprehensive overhaul includes:
The design also incorporates improvements to the HVAC system within the boiler plant and upgrades to the plumbing and fire protection systems. The size of the boiler plant was adjusted to accommodate the VA epidemic standards, which involves operating the air handling units for patient areas on 100% outside air.
The commissioning process is extensive, covering HVAC systems, controls, energy meters, and interfaces with fire alarm and emergency power systems. It includes thorough design reviews, development of detailed commissioning specifications, and performance verification and testing procedures. SES will oversee the installation verification during construction and conduct comprehensive performance testing of all major systems and equipment.
