The Durham Science Center project is a complete modernization of the 160,000 SF facility that was originally constructed in 1985. This project was phased over three years and involved complete demolition and replacement of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems throughout the facility. During the design phase, SES developed the owner’s project requirements, commissioning specifications, and commissioning design review, focusing on maintainability, energy efficiency, reliability and safety for the students and faculty. During the construction phase SES conducted field observations, participated in OAC meetings, led commissioning meetings, and initiated controls coordination in preparation for the multiphase effort.
Our team worked closely with University Facilities staff to ensure they had input and participation in all commissioning activities. Commissioned systems for this challenging renovation include mechanical and HVAC systems which involved lab air control units, fume hoods, exhaust fans, energy recovery, and distribution pumps. Electrical system commissioning included the lighting controls and emergency generator system. In addition, SES witnessed the test performance of the fire alarm system in parallel with the University Inspection Team.
