This project included over 177,000 SF of renovation to an existing office building whose footprint was expanded to include a new 4-story elevator, 2-story gym, aquatic center, and splash pad. Although almost all the infrastructure remained to support the new fit-out, all occupied spaces were demolished to structure and rebuilt to serve the purposes of the Institute.
The modifications accommodate programmatic needs for clinic, therapy, education, collaboration and office spaces. The renovation also includes accessibility updates. Over 17,000 SF of new additions house a new main entrance lobby and elevator core on the east side of the building; an elementary school sized gymnasium; indoor aquatic space; and an enclosed outdoor playground. SES provided master planning services as well as full-service engineering design including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and lighting for the new expansion areas and the renovated areas of the building.
Our team provided design services for security, video surveillance, communications, and life safety systems that needed to be coordinated for unique observation and treatment areas. One way glass allowed direct supervision within these rooms, while numerous other areas required an innovative video observation system. New electrical distribution was required to bring the entire building up to current National Electric Code (NEC) requirements.
Existing elevators were replaced and modernized to meet the needs of the new occupants and current code requirements.
To meet UNMC Standards, the existing telecommunications infrastructure and fire alarm system were replaced. The new space also included a new access control, security surveillance, nurse call, and patient remote observation.
