UNMC Munroe Meyer Institute (MMI)

Institute for Genetics and Rehabilitation

The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) Munroe Meyer Institute (MMI) project will consolidate, replace and improve upon existing MMI facilities, creating a landmark building that reflects and supports the Institute’s mission. The project includes approximately 177,913 square feet of renovation to an existing office building in Omaha, NE. These modifications will accommodate programmatic needs for a clinic, therapy, education, collaboration, and office spaces. The renovation will also include updates to the facility to support better accessibility for those MMI staff and participants with low mobility. The existing interior configurations will be updated where required however the existing envelope, structural system, vertical circulation, and infrastructure are all in good condition to support the long-term utilization of the facility for MMI.

Approximately 17,230 square feet of new additions to the building will house a new main entrance lobby and elevator core on the east side of the building; an elementary school sized gymnasium; indoor aquatic space; and an enclosed outdoor playground area to serve multiple therapy components of the Institute. Landscaping will be enhanced at the main entrance to create a sensory garden. A new behavioral health entrance and associated parking will be created on the west side of the building. Landscaping and a screen wall will be employed at the behavioral health entrance to provide separation from the existing dock area and to create tranquility and a sense of arrival.

The existing entrance on the south end of the building will be repurposed and enhanced with a bus drop off area to support recreation therapy and camp access.

The project necessitates site modifications including roadway and parking reconfiguration. Accessible parking near the main and behavioral health entrances will be partially covered. Primary pedestrian walkways from parking to the main entrance will also be covered with canopies.
