To enhance the campus’s living and learning environments for fraternity and sorority communities, the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK) collaborated with BWBR and KWK Architects to design a new residence hall and renovate the existing Martin Hall. SES served as the MEP engineering design consultant for this project.
The design of both residence halls emphasizes flexibility, with adaptable floor plans to accommodate varying populations each school year. Each residence hall includes over 120 beds, a chapter room per community on the basement level, a great room on the main level, and covered exterior spaces to facilitate chapter interactions.
SES’ scope of work included design services for HVAC, domestic, sanitary, storm, fire protection, electrical, lighting, and low voltage systems. Our team prioritized energy efficiency, daylighting, privacy, and comfort to meet the students’ needs. Innovative design techniques included minimizing the size of components in the plenums to achieve higher ceilings, ensuring clean indoor air quality for human health, and implementing equitable design solutions.
SES collaborated closely with design consultants, construction partners, owner stakeholders, and students to achieve all desired design elements, resulting in a successful project.
