SES, through our longstanding relationship with Avera Health, was asked to provide engineering services for the new home to the Presentation Sisters. The guiding principal for the facility was to provide a place of peace and respite for the Sisters while they carry out their mission. As such, the key aspects of the project were to include quiet systems that would not interfere with the activities of the Sisters and be respectful of the environment through the thoughtful use of energy and materials. All of these aspects were achieved through the use of a chilled beam system. Because the system uses only enough air to provide ventilation for a healthy environment, the noise normally associated with distributed air systems was avoided. The chilled beams provide the heating and cooling of the entire building with virtually no noise and are so quite that white noise was added in some office and public areas to provide added privacy for conversations. Another key aspect to the design was the use of LED lighting, daylight controls and the use of chilled beams to the lower impact to the environment through higher energy efficiency. LED technology reduces the consumption of the artificial lighting and daylight controls allow the lighting to automatically take advantage of the natural light when available, further reducing electricity use. SES is proud to have been part of such a unique project.
