Novant Health Mint Hill Medical Center
Emergency Department Addition

After a facility assessment and master plan was conducted, SES was commissioned to provide engineering design services for the 44,000 SF, 2-story addition. This expansion project includes various vital systems, including mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, electrical, and telecommunication engineering.

The new addition expands treatment spaces, accommodates extra imaging services, enlarges the existing lobby/waiting area, and enhances support spaces on the basement level. Simultaneously, the project includes renovating 13,000 SF within the existing emergency department, including the installation of a new ambulance entrance, examination spaces, radiology equipment, and additional procedure rooms.

During the engineering design process, SES evaluated the current engineering system capacities to confirm the necessity for additional services for both the ED Addition and the new patient beds. Our team addressed existing issues concerning an underutilized Energy Recovery Chiller and provided recommendations to optimize its performance. We also designed new air handling units, mechanical and electrical distribution, connections to electrical equipment, plumbing systems, and fire protection expansion for the ED addition. Additionally, the utilities and infrastructure have been planned to accommodate any future vertical expansions.

SES also provided design for the relocation of an existing mobile imaging unit and the addition of a new mobile unit, complete with a new pad, canopy, and utilities. Furthermore, the space was thoughtfully designed to accommodate behavioral health exam rooms, clinical workspaces, and essential support services.
