Mobridge Regional Hospital Addition/Renovation

This project began with an overall facility assessment of the 25-bed, 67,000 SF hospital which was originally constructed in 1959 and expanded and remodeled several times through the years. Our assessment identified significant departmental deficiencies as well as areas and equipment that were non-compliant with various codes, guidelines and best practices. In addition, aged infrastructure was creating significant operational challenges as equipment was constantly needing maintenance, repair, and replacement. Over several months, the team worked closely with the owner and community to develop a feasibility report to submit for federal grant funding. The feasibility report explored three different potential options: complete hospital replacement; major renovation; and a hybrid approach with a significant addition and remodel of nearly half the existing facility. Funding was approved for the hybrid approach by the USDA and the project moved into schematic design.

During this phase SES worked with the facilities staff to determine how MEP systems could be replaced while minimizing utility outages, systems shutdowns, and operational impacts. Our team developed a design with a 29,000 square foot addition and 26,000 square foot renovation with significant MEP infrastructure including a new chiller plant, new emergency power plant and distribution equipment, new medical gas plant, new electrical service entry and distribution equipment, new air handling equipment, new IT infrastructure, and a complete replacement of the building control and fire alarm systems.

Once a contractor was on board, our newly expanded team worked to validate construction budgets, firmly establish construction phasing, and ensure the owner and community needs were thoroughly addressed as part of the design development process. Construction Documents were developed off the schematic design with contractor input playing an important role to ensure constructability and scheduling concerns were thoroughly vetted.
