Methodist Women’s Hospital NICU Expansion

SES provided engineering services for this 9,000 SF expansion project which extended the 3rd floor NICU. Fourteen new NICU rooms including 2 combination isolation/protective environment rooms were provided. Extensive coordination allowed the 2nd floor LDR space to remain open throughout construction. SES provided design for a new “ultra quiet” air handling system which was installed in a new penthouse above the expansion.

The design team went beyond the traditional lighting schedule used by NICU’s – either all-dark or all-light – and designed for a cycled system providing roughly 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark. Benefits of this new light cycle include increased weight gain, better patient sleep, and earlier release from the hospital. SES also provided Commissioning Services starting at Design through Construction and concluded with Occupancy and Operations.
