The Kiewit Luminarium is an 82,000-square-foot science museum and education center developed as a family-friendly, interactive destination that filled a longstanding gap in Omaha’s cultural landscape. The facility was envisioned to spark children’s interest in science, math, engineering, and technology, with the broader goal of encouraging more young people to pursue careers in STEM fields and help meet growing workforce demands. Privately funded, the Luminarium was constructed along Omaha’s Riverfront near the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge and opened to the public in 2023.
SES was contracted to provide design, construction, and occupancy-phase commissioning services for the project. Our scope of work included conducting design reviews, leading controls coordination meetings, and facilitating ongoing commissioning meetings throughout construction and system testing. In addition, our team participated in OAC meetings and performed regular field observations during construction. Functional performance testing was completed for all mechanical, electrical, and life safety systems. Commissioned equipment included cooling towers, the building management system, lighting controls, air handling units, VAV terminals, and emergency generator systems. Post occupancy services included supporting system fine-tuning through periodic operational reviews in coordination with building operations staff.
The Commissioned Systems include:
HVAC and Mechanical
Emergency Power
Fire Alarm
Lighting Control
