Ashley Hall Renovations

Hands-on experience is crucial in nursing education. To help nursing students fully understand their field, creating a virtually real environment is essential. In 2011, Iowa Western Community College opened the Center for Advanced Nursing and Allied Health Education to achieve this goal. The facility includes a state-of-the-art simulator center featuring interactive mannequins programmed to respond as human beings would. Instructors can view procedures locally or remotely and initiate reactions to simulate emergency situations, thereby better preparing students.

The facility mimics a hospital environment with areas such as triage, birthing rooms, a nursery, labor and delivery rooms, bariatric patient rooms, a laboratory, operating rooms, a mock ambulance, and a residence for home responders. This setup allows students to practice, make mistakes, and learn how to handle real-life medical situations.

Leveraging our extensive background in healthcare and higher education, we designed systems that operate like those in actual healthcare facilities while providing an optimal teaching and learning environment. Advanced technology equips instructors with the tools necessary to instruct, view, communicate, and react to students, thereby creating a realistic educational experience.
