This 52,000 SF Science Center consists of numerous science classrooms and laboratories along with administrative/support areas and various gathering areas for large or small student groups. SES began this project with the goal of obtaining LEED Gold Certification utilizing many energy-conscious designs throughout the building.
Mechanically, the variable air volume air handling system was designed using an air sampling system to control and monitor air quality in laboratories and classrooms. Zone presence sensors monitor fume hood usage and adjust airflows accordingly. An electric hot water maintenance system was designed and implemented in lieu of a recirculation system in this building. Other systems used to conserve energy are a solar water heating system, energy recovery systems and a radiant floor heating system.
Individual offices were designed with wall-switch occupancy sensors to provide automatic control of overhead lighting while also affording the individual occupant control of the ambient lighting. Overhead lighting can be turned ‘off’ at the wall switch to allow the occupant to rely on natural daylight or workstation task lighting for tasks where those sources provide sufficient luminance. When the space is occupied, occupants can manually control overhead lighting.
