Children’s Nebraska West Omaha

Children’s Nebraska constructed a new 2-story, 60,000 SF clinic in West Omaha to extend its services geographically and serve as a western hub. Phase One of the new outpatient facility serves young children and their families while Phase Two provides for a 40,000 SF surgery center, part of the hospital’s long-term growth plan.

The new facility houses specialty clinics, primary care offices, radiology, cardiac and pulmonary services, lab services and a rotational clinic for eight additional specialties. One area of the new outpatient center houses orthopedics, sensory gym, rehab and sports medicine. The sports medicine/rehab area includes an indoor rehab space as well as Children’s first outdoor rehabilitation area allowing more space for rehab activities, fresh air for an enhanced physical and mental healing and a positive environment for increased motivation and overall well-being.

The clinic was designed for optimal flexibility as many of the exam spaces can be used for multiple specialties without the need for extensive reconfiguration. The building exterior features special LED lighting that can be easily changed to acknowledge special awareness months important to Children’s. Incorporating lessons learned from COVID-19, the facility includes a covered drive-thru area where providers can see and treat a child in a car.

SES provided full mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection and low voltage design services for the entire facility and designed to accommodate Phase Two.

The project included specialty LED lighting in the public areas, an efficient water source heat pump system, and provisions for a future MRI. With the project being constructed adjacent to residential areas, special attention was needed for the exterior lighting and integration of the exterior equipment with the building architecture. The exterior mechanical equipment was also engineered for reduced noise levels appropriate for a residential community.
