Cape Fear Valley Vertical Expansion

SES is providing full building system engineering for the 84,000 SF two floor vertical expansion. This $70M+ expansion will add 92 patient beds and help reduce waiting times in the Emergency Department, one of the busiest in North Carolina.

Approximately 40 percent of the new private patient rooms were designed as ICU beds, with the remaining beds designated for medical/surgery inpatient and observation. The project includes approximately 50 prefabricated bathroom pods and prefabricated mechanical racks to reduce on site labor. SES designed an expansion to the existing central plant to support the addition and new equipment.

The project also included two rooftop helipads. One helipad is a standard hospital rooftop helipad for air lifted patients, while the other roof top helipad was designed to accommodate a Black Hawk helicopter due to the military community. SES worked with Bayards, the Helipad Consultant, to work out all the required infrastructure for these helipads in accordance with relevant codes, including NFPA 418, and FAA requirements.

One issue that arose during design was the City’s concern regarding use of a water-based fire suppression system instead of the elaborate foam type solution. SES collaborated with a Fire Protection Engineer to develop a performance-based water deluge solution that would be acceptable to the City of Fayetteville.
