Beatrice Community Hospital and Health Center

SES provided MEP design services for a 143,000-square-foot hospital replacement facility situated on a 45-acre greenfield site. The project scope included the design of various critical hospital departments, including a Medical Surgery Patient Care Unit, Emergency Department, Radiology, Operating Rooms, Central Sterile, Materials Management, Physical Therapy, Kitchen, and Central Utilities Plant. Collaborating closely with our architectural partner, SES developed an efficient and patient-centered space plan. The design optimized public and private circulation, improved departmental adjacencies, and introduced new family areas, resulting in a state-of-the-art hospital and medical office building poised to serve the community for decades to come.

SES designed and implemented a cutting-edge HVAC system featuring three 180-ton water-cooled scroll chillers, three induced draft cooling towers, and associated pumps. The system integrates advanced building automation controls, enabling web-based remote access for plant personnel to maintain optimum comfort and operational efficiency. The electrical distribution system was engineered to ensure reliability and adaptability. It includes power supplied by the local utility, on-site diesel emergency generators for essential loads, and a redundant N+1 UPS configuration to support critical patient care systems. The design also incorporates flexible distribution infrastructure, allowing for future growth and reconfiguration. Lighting systems and controls were selected to balance enhanced energy performance with the functional requirements of hospital operations, clinical care, and patient safety.

The success of this project has led to multiple expansions, renovations, and additions to the facility, solidifying its role as a cornerstone of community healthcare and an example of innovative engineering and design excellence.
