Connected to the existing St. Mary’s Hospital and Clinic, this 3-story, 57,000 SF outpatient facility clinical provides the latest in cancer treatment technology and includes a spacious community atrium with fireplaces and a piano. This facility features a state-of-the-art linear accelerator for radiation treatments with functional spaces to provide infusion therapy, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and pharmacy services. Designed to meet the needs of cancer patients, the facility also offers a meditation room as well as a wig/hat room. Beyond cancer, the Helmsley Center includes a range of healthcare services such as dermatology, orthopedics, podiatry, urology, interventional pain management, ear nose, and throat. The project also included a full renovation of the hospital and nursing home’s central production kitchen and dining space.
SES worked closely with the architect and the Owner to provide full-service master planning and Building Systems Design including MEP Engineering Design Services as well as Fire Protection, Technology, Life Safety, Medical Gas, Lighting Design, and Commissioning Services. Engineering systems required careful planning and coordination with existing conditions. Verification and coordinated reconfiguration of existing utilities was an important part of project planning to clear the way for new work and bridge the vacant parking space between the existing Avera Clinic Building and the existing Avera St Mary’s Hospital.
The building design also required thoughtful integration with the existing hospital systems. HVAC systems were designed to operate independently, allowing for optimized outpatient
operation independent from essential hospital systems. A new centralized high-efficiency hot water boiler system provided energy-conscious support to this northern climate facility. Hospital emergency power systems were extended and modernized to support unique critical operations within the building. To support the logistics of separate daytime and nighttime entries, in the new lobby, multiple low-voltage systems required careful investigation and planning to duplicate and simultaneously operate multiple security and monitoring operations.
