Mercy Musculoskeletal Institute (MSKI)

This complex renovation of a 100-year-old acute care hospital included 152,625 SF of renovation and 5,500 SF of new construction comprising the consolidation of all 16 operating rooms (ORs), sterile processing and clinical research lab. The successful adaptation to the new Musculoskeletal Institute from the existing Mercy Hospital required an in-depth, phased construction approach that renovated departments on every floor of the hospital to modify the types and level of care provided at the future Institute. This project included 26 renovation phases and micro phases over the course of three (3) years. Special care was taken to ensure the fully operational hospital is not affected during construction.

SES provided design services for the renovation of mechanical and electrical systems to the Perioperative Suite, including Pre-Op, PACU, Surgery, and 4 new additional Operating Rooms (OR). Mechanical upgrades included ductwork which was sized to reduce excessive pressure drop and to allow current ACHs, as well as Pandemic Mode with 100% outside air. SES provided several iterations for upgrading the generator plant to accommodate both the kitchen and chiller plant.

Electrical upgraded include updating existing systems and equipment in the areas of renovation to meet current code requirements and a full assessment of the existing electrical panels and equipment.

A challenge in executing this project was centered around the requirement to keep the entire space occupied throughout construction. To overcome this obstacle, a Shutdown Log was maintained for coordination of critical items to minimize downtime.
