Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute

Cancer Institute

The project was a bold move by Atrium Health (formerly Carolina Health System) to invest in a new 6-story Cancer Institute consisting of a mixed occupancy building that combined radiation oncology, a USP pharmacy, treatment space, exam rooms, laboratories, a conference center, and procedure spaces. The new building was programmed with all independent infrastructure.

Through early coordination with the City of Charlotte, the building high-rise needs were outlined with Atrium and high rise smoke control and fire alarm systems. Firm staff provided design and construction administration on new cooling towers, emergency power, heating hot water plant, and domestic water/ fire services.

The new cancer center was built in 2 phases. The First Floor and Lower Level were Phase 1 and are licensed as an I-Occupancy. This initial phase became operational just over 2 years ago. Phase 2 consisted of 5 additional stories that were built on top of the operational Phase 1 and provided a larger Atrium. Consideration was taken to limit disruption and noise for a very sensitive patient population.

The building uses the latest technology. Half of a floor houses the Conference Center that serves worldwide meetings through the use of technology to integrated input internationally to a regional cancer support center.  Since the completion of the project, patient perception and outcomes are positive with care being delivered in more targeted treatment and total care environment.
