Innovating and Expanding Maltese Healthcare
The Republic of Malta continues to make healthcare a priority with ongoing investment in Healthcare and Education to support the next generation of care givers while delivering on a mission “to foster an environment that is conductive to persons attaining their maximum potential for health and well-being”.
SES along with a design consortium that included; Heery International (Architect), Mediterranean Technical Services (local MEP Engineer), and Shapoorji Pallonji Group (Contractor) where hired to program, plan and design innovative solutions at both St. Luke’s General Hospital Campus and Gozo General Hospital Campus within this island community. The project has been designed through schematics and currently consisted of 250 Million for construction in order to build an addition and renovate the existing St. Luke’s Campus while plans on the Gozo Campus called for a new stand-alone Bart’s of London School of Medicine and Dentistry along with a sizable addition and renovation to the Gozo General Hospital.
We worked closely with the authorities having jurisdiction including the EU, UK and Malta standards to meet the strict codes and provide sustainable solutions that would protect the local waters around the islands and reduce environmental impact and energy costs. Some of the system strategies employed focused on reuse of grey water and rain water harvesting as well as solar power to offset and improve long term energy costs.
St. Luke’s Campus Addition and Renovation
St. Luke’s Hospital, located on the main island, and has been vacant for a number of years. Originally constructed in 1927, the facility was expanded over time until vacated when services migrated to Mater Dei Hospital a few miles away. The 800,000 SF St. Luke’s Campus is made up of roughly 12 buildings. The project will provide 50,000 SF of new space while renovating and updating a large portion of the existing hospital. The new construction will include operating theatres, central sterile, imaging, a new main entrance, and exit stairwells. The patient floors will be updated and include acute beds and rehabilitation wards for a total of over 350 beds. Other services will include diagnostics and support, physical and occupational therapy, laboratory facilities, geriatric beds, radiation/oncology, emergency, dermatology, holistic health, in vitro fertilization, trauma, pharmacy, and administration. A new central utility and power plant will power the campus.
Gozo Campus Addition
The existing 300,000 sf campus on the island of Gozo will house both the expanded Gozo Medical Center as well as the Barts of London School of Medicine and Dentistry. The Medical Center will be an acute care facility with the full complement of surgical theatres, emergency room, imaging, laboratory, support space, hyperbaric chambers, geriatric, anatomy, central sterile, rehabilitation, psychiatric, pharmacy, chemotherapy, cardiology, outpatient, orthopedic, maternity, pediatric, intensive care unit and renal. There will be a new 4-story 285,000 SF tower which will be added to the existing hospital. The Barts school is a new 5-story 65,000 SF, free-standing building and will be an educational building with skills labs, conference rooms, presentation rooms and a food service component. The school is self-contained, sharing no services with the Hospital. Design for this campus included the addition of two buildings. In addition to the new buildings, renovation of most of the existing facility will take place as well as a new central utility and power plant to serve the entire hospital.
